Why is Robert Louis Stevenson so important in literature?

Scottish author and playwright Robert Louis Stevenson was the creative mind behind such household names as 'Treasure Island' (1883) and 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' (1886). Since his premature death in 1894, opinion has been divided as to the extent of Stevenson's influence on the literary canon. However, nowadays he is generally held in high esteem. Indeed, his achievements and endeavors seem particularly impressive given his lifelong battles with his health.
