Israeli forces surrounded a northern Gaza hospital, ordering its evacuation after a nearby airstrike killed about 50 people, this according to Palestine's health ministry.
“There are approximately 50 martyrs, including three of our medical staff, under the rubble of a building opposite Kamal Adwan Hospital after an airstrike by the occupying forces,” said Dr. Abu Safiya. Two paramedics were killed in a strike near the hospital, en route, the director said, adding their bodies remain inaccessible in the street.
Israel claims Hamas uses hospitals for military operations, including command centers, weapons storage, and hiding hostages. Released videos are cited as evidence, but Hamas denies the claims, and the footage lacks definitive proof. The WHO says Israel has repeatedly denied humanitarian access to Kamal Adwan Hospital, including a recent request for emergency medical teams for urgent surgeries.
Civilian populations face dire consequences of the systematic erosion of international humanitarian norms. The increased frequency of targeting hospitals and medical personnel is part of broader strategies to demoralize and control local populations. These measures violate the Geneva Conventions, which mandate the protection of civilian medical infrastructure, even during wartime. What happens to public health when there is reduced access to medical care? What occurs when the integrity of humanitarian law is challenged? And how can protection measures for healthcare facilities be strengthened? Click on for these answers and more.
