According to Hebrew texts, 12 tribes once occupied the Land of Israel. Formed by descendants of the patriarch Jacob (later named Israel), these tribes went on to live, fight, conquer, and be conquered. Their settlement lasted for many years, but eventually came to an end (at least for some).

When King Solomon died, the Land of Israel split into two kingdoms—the northern kingdom (Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah). Two tribes, Benjamin and Judah, made up the southern kingdom, while the remaining 10 tribes were part of the northern kingdom. The Assyrians then took the northern kingdom in 722 BCE, and many Israelites fled or were deported. These are known as the lost tribes of Israel. The southern kingdom (Judah), however, remained.

In this gallery, we look back at the history of the 12 tribes of Israel. Click on to learn more about them.
