The Washington Commanders have introduced a new mascot and, as the team tweeted, "he's kind of a pig deal." The mascot, named Major Tuddy, is a hog wearing a Commanders uniform and is a reference to "The Hogs" nickname given to the franchise's offensive linemen during the '80s and '90s under coach Joe Gibbs. Offensive line coach Joe Bugel is responsible for that nickname, which was applied to notable star players like Russ Grimm, Mark May, Jeff Bostic, Joe Jacoby, and Mark Schlereth--several of whom were at the January 1 match against the Cleveland Browns, where Major Tuddy was unveiled.

A mascot, whether human, animal, or object, represents a group or team and is thought to bring good luck. In sport, a mascot lends a team character, personality, and a face. And nowhere is this better exemplified than in the National Football League.

The NFL is a professional American football league that consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Twenty eight of these teams have mascots, costumed characters that include Billy Buffalo, K.C. Wolf, and Sourdough Sam. Beloved by players and spectators alike, these mascots help charge the atmosphere and raise the game, working alongside cheerleaders in driving their team forward towards a win.
