No partner? No problem! If you’re single, celebrate! There’s no better time to reconnect with yourself. Being alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely! There are also plenty of benefits to being single.
In fact, a study from SAGE Journals found that single people tend to have closer ties with friends and relatives than their “taken” counterparts. Singles were also shown to provide regular support to, and stay in touch with, the loved ones in their lives—more so than those in a relationship.
What else? Well, you can sleep like a starfish! A survey by Amerisleep concluded that single people are getting more sleep. The quality of sleep also tended to decline the longer couples were together, but that may be due to other factors such as mortgages or children.
Now, remember that stereotype about how being in a relationship makes you gain a few love pounds? Well, it’s not entirely untrue. A study done by Psychology Today found that singles hit the gym at higher rates than those in relationships. According to their research, single men work out twice as often as married men!
And great news for single ladies: various studies have found that women without a significant other report having more fulfilling sex lives, doing less menial chores around the house, and overall being happier than married women. Not a bad deal, right?
Indeed, while marriage has proven benefits of its own, such as living longer and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, if you’re in the midst of singledom, there are plenty of benefits to enjoy. One of the greatest of which is to self-date. That's right! Date nights don't necessarily require a second person.
