Long famed, the Buffalo Soldiers were African-American troops whose regiments were the first comprised solely of all-black combatants. Evolving from the segregated units that saw action during the American Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers earned a reputation for courage and self-discipline in various campaigns including the Indian Wars, the Spanish–American War, and the Philippine–American War. But despite their gallantry on the battlefield, these colored servicemen were still subject to prejudice and discrimination—intolerance that followed them into the 20th century and the First and Second World Wars.
