Paradoxes have been used in many philosophical discussions to try and engage conversation and debate. They are essentially statements or stories that contradict themselves or defy logic. They reveal deeper truths and challenge conventional reasoning, if they appear without an answer.
The Ship of Theseus paradox was originally put forward by the Greek philosopher Plutarch, who was born in the 1st century CE. The philosophical dilemma was presented in his novel ‘Life of Theseus,’ and it remains relevant to this day.
Theseus was a Greek hero of myth, celebrated for slaying the Minotaur and navigating the perilous Labyrinth. Of the many tales that have been spun from Theseus’ journeys and exploits, the story of his ship is perhaps one of the most intriguing.
After Theseus defeated the Minotaur and sailed back to Athens, his ship became an object of deep reverence. For many years after, Athenians took care of the ship in homage to the hero’s feats.
But over time, parts of the ship needed to be replaced. Between rotting timber boards and damage caused by storms, new parts were brought in to restore the old ones, little by little. By the end, philosophers were left with one question: if all the parts of Theseus’ ship were replaced, was it still his ship? Or was it something else entirely?
In ancient Greece, thinkers debated whether Theseus’ ship, gradually rebuilt over decades, was still the same ship. The thought experiment became a philosophical foundation for trying to understand the relationship between the material world and the deeper essence of identity.
Philosophers have also posed another question: if every discarded part of Theseus’ original ship were saved and used to build an identical vessel, which one would be the “true” Ship of Theseus?
These philosophical questions try to make people consider the meaning of change and identity, especially in their own lives. Is a person’s identity defined by their physical being or does their essence transcend the tangible world?
Over the millennia, many philosophers have attempted to answer these questions, although there are many answers. One solution says that if two identical-looking ships exist at different times, then they’re not the same ship.
The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus argued that everything in the world is in a state of flux, which means that change is the only constant. As such, Theseus’ ship (and indeed all things in the universe) are never truly the same, as they are continuously evolving and transforming over time.
To make his point, Heraclitus used a river as an example. If a person stepped into the same river twice, the water would be different. It is constantly moving and so the person would not have the same experience again. And yet, the river is still considered the same river.
To accept the idea of constant change, it first requires redefining "sameness." Identity might not be based on static and unchanging characteristics, but rather it is a dynamic process that shifts depending on purpose and patterns of behavior.
Another solution to the paradox was presented by Aristotle. He suggested that Theseus’ ship retains its identity as long as its purpose, form, and fundamental nature remain intact. Even if the materials were replaced, its essence (the qualities that define it) serves as the anchor of its identity.
Aristotle also believed that the identity of the ship of Theseus could be preserved through the very methods and expertise of the builders. If the same craftsmanship and techniques used to build the ship were used to repair it, then the ship’s essence would be preserved through its design.
The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes proposed that Theseus’ ship retains its identity through its historical connection to the Greek hero. The ship’s essence and meaning comes from its history and its link to Theseus.
Hobbes believed that the parts of the ship that went with Theseus on his voyages have a historical significance, since they can be traced back to the hero. The philosopher made it clear that historical links are what preserve identity over time.
Another potential solution to the paradox was presented by a contemporary philosopher named David Lewis. He believed that temporality (time itself) held the answer.
Imagine taking time itself and cutting it into pieces, where each moment is recorded as something separate. Lewis’ theory suggests that these separate parts have no relation to one another and are considered separate moments in time.
This would suggest that Theseus’ ship could very well exist in the same place at two different times. The ship is not immovable or unchangeable. Whether a person is looking at the ship before it first set sail or looking at the one that had been extensively repaired, they are both part of the same story. But they are not the same boat.
According to Lewis, identity is less about the physical and material parts of life and more about the ship’s journey through time. As the ship evolves, it remains connected to its origins, which defines its true essence.
The Ship of Theseus paradox has influenced literature, films, and pop culture for millennia. From the novel ‘The Fifth Elephant’ (1999), written by Terry Pratchett (pictured), to philosophical themes in movies, it continues to provoke questions about identity and change in ways that resonate universally.
A practical and contemporary example of the Ship of Theseus paradox can be seen with the historic Russian cruiser Aurora. During restoration, almost everything on board was replaced. Is it still the Aurora cruiser, or is it something else entirely?
Interestingly, the paradox can be applied to technology today. People constantly replace phone components like screens or batteries, yet still regard it as the "same" device and still see it as “their” phone. This raises questions about whether identity is tied to ownership.
Like Theseus’ ship, humans undergo constant transformation, shedding beliefs, habits, and even physical cells. Despite these changes, people often perceive themselves as continuous beings. After all, identity transcends the physical or mental shifts that people experience over time.
Art conservation is another example that mirrors the paradox. When paintings or sculptures are restored, how much can be altered before they lose their originality? Philosophers believe that there is a delicate balance between preserving identity and adapting to inevitable change.
Institutions, such as governments and organizations, also transform over time. They adopt new leaders, values, and goals. Yet, their identity often persists, rooted in their founding principles or historical mission, much like Theseus’ evolving but enduring ship.
Ultimately, only one question remains: is an object or a person’s continued existence defined by unbroken physical sameness or by something more abstract, like purpose or essence? There may never be a concrete answer, but the topic remains central to understanding identity in philosophy.
Rather than definitively answering what defines identity, the paradox invites us to ask ongoing questions about how we stay the same through change. It is a thought experiment that is meant to force people to engage deeper reflections on their existence in the universe.
