Eastern and southern Spain were hit by torrential rains that caused flash floods in several parts of the country. The heavy rains have been attributed to a weather phenomenon known as the gota fría, or “cold drop,” which occurs in the Mediterranean coast.
The floods not only caused extensive damage to property and disrupted road, rail, and air travel, but the events also claimed lives. The exact number of the final death toll is not yet known, but according to Spanish authorities at least 95 people have lost their lives so far.
