What makes a series irresistible?

A disturbing point of view can certainly help the addictive quality of a show, creating a suspenseful narrative and allowing for surprising twists.

Series where murders are the stars of the show, rather than the subject (as in 'Mindhunter' or 'Luther') have a very particular allure.

With the massive popularity of 'You,' lets look at these captivating series as seen through the bad guy's eyes.

Hulu's show 'Candy' gives us Jessica Biel as the real-life Candy Montgomery who was at the center of a controversial trial in Texas over the gruesome 1980 murder of Betty Gore, played by Melanie Lynskey. The true crime adaptation is based on the book 'Evidence of Love' and depicts the events leading up to and following the ax murder.

Twelve years after the movie, the TV show 'Hannibal' (2013) starring Mads Mikkelsen debuted to critical acclaim. But given the cult-level status of the film, the series had a lot to live up to.

▲

The show's thematic structure, along with the spectacular performances from Gillian Anderson and Mads Mikkelsen, created an addictive, creepy series that would delight any serial killer fanatic.

▲Despite garnering a cult following and being considered one of the greatest horror TV series of recent years, the show was cancelled in 2015 due to low ratings.
▲A prequel to the Hitchcock classic 'Psycho' (1960), the 'Bates Motel' (2013) series follows Norman Bates' disturbing relationship with his mother.
▲The darkness that engulfs Norman, mother Norma, and the unfortunate souls who stay at their hotel makes for titillating viewing. The Hitchcock influence is alive in every episode.
▲

The series ran a strong five seasons before wrapping in 2017, with Norman Bates primed to begin his 'Psycho' killings.

▲

A serial killer who hunts serial killers, 'Dexter' was the murder POV series to end them all for a considerable stretch of time. The seventh season was viewed by over six million fans per week.

▲Despite high ratings, fans and critics alike were disappointed with the series by season six. The show that once provided the brooding machinations of a psychopath attempting to understand himself was now just another show.
▲The season eight premiere was the most-watched episode of the series, with three million viewers tuning in to the one episode. It would be the last season of the groundbreaking series. Until 2021...
▲

Years later, fans were delighted to hear that Dexter Morgan was returning for a 10-episode revival. The new series, 'Dexter: New Blood,' aired in November 2021 and follows Dexter living under a new name in a snowy town in New York, more or less peacefully until his son shows up.

▲It's all the rage now and if you haven't give it a taste, Netflix's 'You' is worth the dabble. This stalker-turned-killer series is worth the investment.
▲Premiering in 2018, the Netflix creation is all about seeing through a madman's eyes. The series often makes the main character appear lovable, despite his misdeeds.
▲But if you watch the show for long enough, you'll learn to hate the character they tried to make you love.
▲If true crime straight from the horse's mouth is what you're after, look no further than 'The Killer Speaks.'
▲Actual convicted murders, like Van Brett Watkins pictured here, talk directly into the camera, explaining and narrating their crimes.
▲In total there were 11 episodes featuring killers like Dena Riley, pictured here, telling their tale.
▲Seen through the eyes of both the detective, played by Gillian Anderson, and the serial killer, played by Jamie Dornan, this innovative British series isn't one to miss.
▲The suspenseful series based in Belfast, Northern Ireland was nominated for two BAFTAs in 2014.
▲The show developed a substantial following and remains popular, but ended in 2016 after three seasons.
▲The UK's first female serial killer is profiled in this two-part miniseries starring Joanne Froggatt (pictured).
▲

The miniseries is a biopic of Victorian poisoner, Mary Ann Cotton, who likely killed 21 people, including her four husbands to collect their insurance policies.

▲

The 2016 miniseries was somewhat panned by critics, and received two awards nominations in the US and South Korea.
