Trump cleared of all fines and jail time for hush money conviction
He will still enter office as a convicted felon

US President-elect Donald Trump has been sentenced to unconditional discharge in a historic case in New York. This means that he will not receive any prison time, probation, or fines, despite being found guilty of 34 counts of business fraud last year.
Judge Juan Merchan called the case "extraordinary" and said his ruling was "the most viable solution” and "only lawful sentence, without encroaching upon the highest office in the land," with Trump due to take office in a few days.
In May 2024, Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records, related to the hush money that he paid adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. While paying hush money is not a crime in New York, Trump was charged for how he reimbursed his lawyer, who subsequently paid Daniels.
The president-elect delayed his hearing from July and tried to delay it again on January 9, but his request was denied. He appeared via video link alongside his lawyer and told the court that he’d had a "very terrible experience." Following the sentencing, he took to the Truth Social platform with a lengthy post in which he described the case as a “Witch Hunt” and went on to say “THERE IS NO CASE, THERE WAS NEVER A CASE, and this whole scam fully deserves to be DISMISSED."
There’s no doubt that Trump was the most controversial and scandalous president in American history, and that was just in his first term. To get up to speed on his unprecedented political career, click through this gallery.
